About IBC Tote UV Covers
IBC Tote UV Covers feature waterproof, mildew-resistant, and fire-retardant materials designed to withstand extreme weather, with some units lasting up to 10 years in continuous outdoor use. Higher-quality Tote UV Covers are primarily constructed from heavyweight, woven polyester that is fully coated to block 100% of harmful ultraviolet rays, preventing algae growth and plastic degradation.
- Size: Available in 210D, 420D, and 600D thickness covering and protecting the entire 275 gallon tote from top to bottom.
- Secure Fit: Usually equipped with grommets, elastic hems, and tie-down straps to prevent covers from blowing off in high winds.
- Accessibility: Best designs include a top opening hatch with a frontal zipper for easy monitoring and access to contents without compromising UV protection.
- Durability: Materials are often woven polyester, UV-stabilized, cold-resistant (down to -40°F/-40°C), and chemical-resistant, ensuring long-term integrity against sun, rain, dust, and debris.
- Breathability: Better models feature mesh vents to reduce condensation and mildew buildup while maintaining a waterproof exterior.
While painted totes or black plastic wraps are common DIY alternatives and affective, they often lack the durability and complete light-blocking capability of purpose-built covers and can be difficult to determine content level. For optimal protection, HDPE totes with factory-blended UV inhibitors are often paired with these covers to prevent brittleness and potential tank failure.
About IBC Totes And Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes can be found in IBC totes if they are not properly sealed or screened. Because female mosquitoes are attracted to stagnant water to lay eggs, uncovered IBC totes or those with gaps in downspouts act as ideal breeding sites for larvae. A tote cap lid filter can usually solve the mosquito issue. To prevent mosquitoes, effective mitigation strategies include:
- Physical Barriers: Install fine mesh screens over tank inlets and downspouts to block adult mosquitoes from entering.
- Larvicides: For non-potable water, use Mosquito Dunks (containing BTi) which release a biocontrol agent that kills larvae before they mature.
- Surface Film: Applying a thin layer of vegetable oil suffocates larvae by cutting off their air supply, though this is not suitable for fish ponds.
- Covering: Keeping totes covered or painted dark reduces sunlight exposure, which inhibits larval germination and algae growth.
A Mosquito Dunk® looks like a small, beige donut which floats on standing water. As the Dunk® slowly dissolves, it releases a bacterium which is toxic to all species of mosquito larvae.
Each dunk® kills mosquito larvae for 30 days or more and is approved for use in organic production.
Each dunk® covers up to 100 square feet of water, regardless of depth for 30 days or more when using Mosquito Dunks® in any standing water including rain barrels, bird baths, planter reservoirs, rain gutters, and other standing water.
Supposedly non-toxic to all plants, wildlife, pets, fish and humans.
About Rainwater Collection Systems
The Oatey Mystic 2" x 3" Rainwater Collection System is probably one of the better rainwater collection system for low volume rainwater collection purposes. Unfortunately, it appears that Oatey Mystic does not offer a 3" x 4" Rainwater Collection System. You can use PVC reducer couplings under the gutter opening for 2" x 3" or 3" x 4" spouting to 2" or 3" PVC to your tote cap filter available at your local hardware store.
The Oatey type rainwater collection system has some issues such as slow or less rainwater collection and rainwater overflow issues where 2" or 3" pvc rainwater collection guarantees maximum rain water collection.
We prefer 2" pvc pipe installed directly from the gutter or downspout routed to the tote opening for maximum water collection.
Note: Rainwater totes have accessory equipment that is available for custom tank needs and specific application requirements such as different fitting and coupler attachment options. Top and bottom unloading pumps are available for water dispensing, along with hand nozzle and tubing kits for this purpose. These additional options are easily available for purchase.
